Travis Hudson —
Software Developer
Please introduce yourself and describe, in broad terms, what you do for Delex.
I'm Travis Hudson, a Virginia Tech graduate with degrees in Computer Science and English. Delex is my first long-term job. I'm a software developer, which means I work with C++ to develop military training programs. My work is split between programming user interfaces and background logic.
How do you feel about your work environment?
I really enjoy working here. It's a friendly atmosphere with plenty of freedom to work how you want. There aren't any ridiculous rules to follow and you don't feel like a boss is always lording over you. We don't have to deal with much excess paperwork, so we can just get along with actual programming. People are always willing to talk and offer help when they can.
What skills have you learned or developed at Delex?
In terms of programming, I had never used the Microsoft Foundation Classes before working here, so my first few weeks were spent getting to know those. I also continue to enhance my knowledge of C++ in general. Since I'm one of the younger developers, I'm sometimes asked about coding practices to get a more current viewpoint than older programmers might have. In other regards, I've learned how to interact with coworkers better than at my previous jobs. I had never worked in an office environment before, so spending large amounts of time in a cubical was a new experience for me. Finally, organization has always been a strong suit of mine and working here has put those skills to good use.
What do you consider your greatest accomplishment at Delex?
Programming a new fire control system from the ground up has been my biggest achievement so far. It had been a while since I had worked on a large program, so it was a good way to get back in the game. Nothing makes you work harder and code better than knowing that if something goes wrong, you will have to fix it. The project also forced me to start interacting with coworkers more, which was a very good side effect.
